Structural Heart Disease

I provide outpatient evaluation and imaging for children born with changes to the structure of their heart (congenital heart disease), from routine findings like small holes between the heart chambers to complex single-ventricle physiology. Many children with structural heart disease grow into active teenagers and young adults, but lifelong cardiology follow-up is important to monitor for progressive changes. I help families understand what their child's diagnosis means and what to expect as they grow. If an intervention or surgery becomes necessary, I coordinate care with your child's hospital-based team and guide you through every step of that journey.

Chest Pain, Palpitations, and Fainting

Many children and teens experience chest pain, a racing or skipping heartbeat, or fainting episodes. I sort out whether these symptoms are due to a cardiac condition and give your family a clear plan.

Aorta and Connective Tissue Disease

Connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome affect the heart and aorta. These conditions require careful monitoring.

Arrhythmias and Rhythm Concerns

Some children have an irregular heartbeat or rhythm concerns. Some are benign. I evaluate children with symptoms of a racing or irregular heart beat, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), and other rhythm concerns to determine what's happening and whether specialist referral or ongoing care is needed.

Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a condition affecting the heart muscle itself. Children with cardiomyopathy need specialized care and close monitoring. I evaluate children suspected of having cardiomyopathy and coordinate their care with a dedicated cardiomyopathy and heart failure specialist.

Autonomic Dysfunction and POTS

Some young people experience unexplained lightheadedness, a fast heartbeat, and fainting when standing. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and other forms of autonomic dysfunction can cause these symptoms. I help families understand what's happening and develop a management plan.

Acquired Heart Disease

Some children develop heart conditions after birth in response to infection or inflammation. These include Kawasaki disease, myocarditis, pericarditis, and rheumatic heart disease among others. I evaluate children with these conditions and coordinate ongoing care with their hospital-based team when needed.

Sports Evaluation

I evaluate young athletes with abnormal ECGs, cardiac symptoms, or a concerning family history to determine whether they can safely participate in sports. My evaluation includes a focused history, physical exam, ECG, in addition to other cardiac testing such as echocardiogram or stress test, if indicated.

Cardiac Evaluation Before Surgery

Children undergoing surgery may need cardiac evaluation to ensure they can safely tolerate anesthesia and the surgery or procedure. I perform preoperative cardiac assessments and coordinate care with surgical and anesthesia teams.
